A comprehensive look at how artists of varying backgrounds have been inspired by the ideas, truths and myths surrounding African art
Africa Imagined is a programme designed to juxtapose mostly West African works of art with European and American modern and contemporary works. It is a uniquely curated exhibition of artworks, some loaned and some from the Kalamazoo Institute’s collection, that explore three key themes: escapism, social inquiry, and cultural reclamation. The display highlights a framed print by El Anatsui, one of an edition of 5 screenprints created in 2013 by the artist in partnership with Benefit Print Project. Other exhibiting artists include Romare Bearden, Beatrice Bassette, Fred Wilson, Bruce Onobrakpeya, and Lamidi Fakeye.
