Curated by N'Goné Fall, El's first solo exhibition in France is designed to echo the centuries old history of the former medieval royal palace

The inaugural exhibition of the Africa 2020 Season, conceived as an invitation to look at and understand the world from an African point of view, sees El Anatsui’s poetic installations, designed specifically for the occasion, shimmer and dazzle as they have been known to do, this time in the majestic setting of the Salle des Gens d’Armes of La Conciergerie.

As with practically all other public events at the time, the exhibition suffered a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the doors to the former medieval royal palace, which became a prison during the Revolution, have opened to the public. The walls and fireplaces of the halls of the Salle des Gens d’Armes are filled with new works that reflect the theme of the exhibition. These include 6 bottle cap tapestries, 50 works in resin, each simulating a different type of rock done in collaboration with Factum Arte, and two video installations projected onto platforms located next to the central pillars of the Salle des Gens d’Armes done in collaboration with Factum Arte and October Gallery.
