Material Earth showcases the works of three Ghanaian pioneers of visual arts, El Anatsui, Yaw Owusu and Isshaq Ismail. These artists have sewn and are sewing their names into the fabric of contemporary African art regardless of what direction current trends in the industry are taking. The title of the exhibition, refers to the use of upcycled material in the creative processes of these artists, the use of everyday materials transformed into works of complex beauty. Material Earth is presented by Efie Gallery in collaboration with Christie’s and is directed by Isabel Millar.
The exhibition features 3 relatively new works by El Anatsui. The most recent, Elephant in the Room, 2022, is the latest entry in the newest series of chainsaw-carved, wood-panel sculptures by the artist. The other two Anatsui pieces in the exhibition are his well-known, large colourful tapestries made from upcycled aluminium bottle caps and copper wire.
