The Second Careers exhibition explores the role of traditional African art in a Western museum context and the relationship between traditional and modern day art practices in Africa. It displays nine historical African artworks from the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA), Emory University’s Michael C. Carlos Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum, alongside the art of six contemporary practitioners representing different generations; El Anatsui, Tahir Carl Karmali, Gonçalo Mabunda, Nnenna Okore, Zohra Opoku, and Elias Sime. Anatsui’s Earth Growing Roots, 2007 is the dominant force on the wall of large-scale works alongside those of Okore and Sime.
