An ongoing project to redefine the museum's permanent collection
This project began in 2016 and is meant as a symbol of the start to a new chapter in the history of the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rome. Time is Out of Joint is an exhibition that gives the public a first look at Galleria Nazionale‘s ongoing efforts to transform, rearrange, and renovate its display. The title quotes Shakespeare’s Hamlet; “The time is out of joint—O cursèd spite, That ever I was born to set it right!.” Installed prominently on a gallery wall is a prize of the museum’s collection, a work by Nigeria-based legend of contemporary sculpture, El Anatsui. The untitled piece, executed circa 2008, is a large, colourful tapestry made from manipulated aluminium bottle-caps stitched together with copper wire.
